- Sushi mat
- Bowl
- Knife and cutting board
Step 1: Cook the Rice
Rinse and cook short-grain Japanese rice with the appropriate amount of water. Season it with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt while still hot. Let the rice cool to room temperature before using it.
Step 2: Assemble the Sushi
Place a sheet of nori on a sushi mat (or a clean kitchen towel). Wet your hands and spread a layer of seasoned rice over it leaving about 1 inch of space at the top. Add fillings and roll the mat tightly around the fillings until you have a tight cylinder-shaped sushi roll. Wet the exposed edge of the nori with a bit of water to help it stick.
Step 3: Slice and Season
Slice the sushi rolls into 1-inch pieces and serve with soy sauce and wasabi for dipping. You can also add pickled ginger, sesame seeds, and other condiments to enhance the flavor.
