Caroline Davies is an embroidery artist who has been producing 3D embroidered artworks inspired by food since early 2023. Textiles was an interest and hobby for Caroline throughout her childhood, but became a more serious past time as she rediscovered the joy of crafting as an adult. Embroidery in particular captured her attention as so much can be conveyed through stitch; colour, texture, movement. The process of embroidery is both creative and mindful.
In 2025 Caroline won the Viewer’s Choice award at the Broderer’s Exhibition which took place at the Bankside Gallery in London, England. She was shortlisted alongside nineteen other artists and was honoured to receive the prize amongst such a wealth of talent.
The theme of food provides endless inspiration for Caroline. There are so many different food types, from vegetables to junk food, individual items to full meals, that it seems like a never-ending source of ideas to create new pieces. Food is very relatable; people spend a lot of time thinking about, preparing, and eating food.
Caroline aims to make people smile with her work. Her embroideries are whimsical and fun and she hopes to inspire nostalgia and joy in the viewer. Whilst she takes the process of embroidery and textile construction seriously, she wants the theme of her work to be enjoyable and lighthearted. Caroline is passionate about promoting embroidery as an art form. It has historically been viewed as ‘domestic work’, however there is a lot of skill and expertise involved in producing high quality embroideries. By framing her work she hopes to position embroidery as a contemporary art practice in the viewer’s eyes.

A variety of textile techniques
Caroline’s artwork is made using a variety of textile techniques including traditional hand embroidery stitches, stumpwork, and textile construction. All the pieces are hand sewn and can take between 20 to 300 hours depending on the size of the piece.
Texture, volume and color
Caroline uses stranded embroidery thread as the number of strands can be adjusted for the textures required and it is excellent for colour blending. She sews onto cotton or felt depending on the structure of the piece; felt gives a sturdier finish and cotton allows for more flexibility. The works are given body with stuffing or wadding.
A new challenge for each project
Caroline is inspired by food because of the variety it provides. Each project is a new challenge in recreating textures, colours, and shapes. The construction of each food item is particularly interesting to Caroline, transferring a flat design into a 3D form.
