Plate Button
London, England
All food sourced from the haberdashery
Sabrina Lee is a designer based in London, born and raised in Hong Kong. She began Plate Button in 2021 while studying at the AA School of Architecture, where she once used tiny white buttons to represent plates in a scaled model of a restaurant. This small idea later led to a creative challenge she set for herself: to use only materials found in the haberdashery (merceria) to create miniature food.
Rather than making hyper-realistic miniature, Plate Button recreates food in a playful and imaginative way using existing materials, such as buttons and beads. The choice of materials gives a sense of nostalgia, highlighting the sentimental value of food.

Value in the details

Craft is playful and intuitive
The process of the craft is playful and intuitive. New designs are created by experimenting with different combinations of buttons, beads, threads, and other materials. While sewing and delicate handwork are needed to assemble the materials together, it does not require specific embroidery techniques.

Recycle and Upcycle
Materials are sourced in very limited amounts from various haberdashery shops in London, as well as overseas during personal travelling. Whenever possible, recycled materials are used to reduce waste, such as cleaned second-hand fabric and unwanted interior design samples.

Celebration of food and memories
As a foodie, Sabrina often draws inspirations from her own meals, including dishes she likes to cook, or cuisine she discovered during her travels. Plate Button has since grown into a brand that offers bespoke pieces; each handcrafted work is a celebration of food, and the memory and love it carries.
