Carola Varacalli

Milan, ITALY

Give shape to your confusion.

Carola Varacalli, 27, was born and lives in Milan, where she studied and currently works. During her studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, she became interested in ceramics, attending two wheel-throwing courses — one in Umbria and one in Milan. After graduating in 2022, she decided to devote herself entirely to this practice.

Her research has always been guided by tridimensionality and organic forms. Clay thus became her material of choice for exploring free-flowing, sinuous shapes. On the surfaces of her vessels, there is a reference to the freedom of the blank canvas: slips and glazes behave like paint, making ceramics the ideal meeting point between different artistic languages.

You might wonder...

I do, in case of special request you can text me on instagram and we can talk abou it, i can change texture, colour and shape.

Yes i do. I either do single workshop or long courses depending on people's request.

I’m aware of the price difference you may notice compared to industrial products found in stores, but unfortunately — or perhaps fortunately — the value of the object in front of you lies in the years of work, effort, skill, and dedication I have invested in making it, as well as in the ideas, experimentation, and research behind its creation.

It is also valuable because it is unique, and because it carries something of the person who made it — of the hands that shaped it and cared for it with meticulous attention.

Techniques

Carola’s practice always begins with kneading different clays in preparation for working on the wheel, where she creates objects.
The pieces are then trimmed and decorated; it is during this stage that the character, form, and color of each object are defined. They are subsequently left to dry, fired, glazed, and fired once again.
